I am inspired by the female form, my patriotism to my country and the beautiful people in it. My design has always been about making women feel wonderful about themselves. At Desray, we dress real women for real lives. When we make a woman feel confident because she is wearing our clothes, we are achieving what we set out to do.
We strive to craft pieces that are creatively unique. I believe you design your wardrobe as you design your home and practice the same philosophy to both; staples in plains, and having fun with trends to accentuate, excite and invigorate.
Our collections are not based on one season. We want each customer’s wardrobe to be constructed over time into a sophistically elegant collection. And a collection it will remain. We do not mass produce.
We are a family business. My brother Mike is my right-hand man on the business side, my mother Janice is my inspiration into this industry, but more importantly my fail-safe and sounding board for design. My sister-in-law Tertia is our marketing-general-helper-person. Our in-house team includes a group of incredible people that have been with us from the beginning. These people are the reason I get up in the morning. Together we can do great things.
This business has raised me, but simultaneously, as a team, we have been nurturing and manicuring Desray to grow and flourish into a label South Africa can be proud of.
We accept only the best quality in fabrication and workmanship. We do everything ourselves at our factory in Observatory in Cape Town. We make our own patterns (by hand), we do our own cutting (by hand, with scissors!) and we sew (by hand, with sewing machines) 95% of our entire range ourselves. A garment does not leave our floor that I have not tried on and passed myself.
We support local suppliers. We believe our country has enormous creative and economic potential, we just need to support one another.
